Possible Side Effects & Risks

As with any medical procedure, botulinum toxin treatment can cause side effects.

Temporary injection-site reactions may include: redness; swelling; tenderness; bruising; or headache.

Other effects depend on the area treated and may include temporary weakness of nearby muscles or unwanted changes in facial movement.

Rare but potentially serious adverse effects can occur.

A detailed medical history, appropriate patient selection, correct dosing and accurate anatomical placement are therefore important parts of treatment.

Patients should receive appropriate medical advice regarding contraindications, precautions and symptoms requiring medical attention before treatment.

Read more about BOTOX®

BOTOX® Cosmetic is an established botulinum toxin type A treatment used to temporarily reduce selected muscle activity responsible for dynamic facial lines.

At Pearl Skin Polyclinic in Dubai, BOTOX® treatment begins with an assessment of your facial anatomy and muscle activity — not with a standard injection map.

Every face moves differently. Muscle strength, eyebrow position, facial proportions, existing asymmetry and the interaction between different muscles all influence how treatment should be planned.

Our goal is not to remove every expression from the face.

Our goal is to soften excessive muscle activity while preserving natural movement, facial balance and your individual expression.

What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic contains onabotulinumtoxinA, a botulinum toxin type A.

It works by temporarily reducing signalling between nerves and specifically selected muscles.

In aesthetic medicine, this is particularly useful for dynamic wrinkles — lines that develop or become more visible when facial muscles repeatedly contract.

However, not every wrinkle has the same cause.

Lines can also be influenced by: collagen loss; photodamage; dehydration; reduced skin elasticity; changes in facial volume; tissue laxity; or a combination of several factors.

BOTOX® primarily addresses muscle activity.

If your concern is predominantly caused by another process, a different treatment — or a combination of treatments — may be more appropriate.

How Does BOTOX® Work?

When we smile, frown, squint or raise our eyebrows, facial muscles repeatedly contract and fold the skin above them.

Over time, these dynamic lines can become increasingly visible and may eventually remain noticeable even when the face is relaxed.

BOTOX® temporarily reduces communication between the nerve and selected muscle.

The muscle remains present, but its activity is temporarily reduced.

This allows dynamic lines to soften.

The objective is not necessarily to eliminate all movement.

The degree of relaxation is selected according to facial anatomy, muscle strength and the patient's desired result.

Dynamic vs Static Wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles become visible or deepen during facial movement. Examples include forehead lines when raising the eyebrows, frown lines when concentrating and crow’s feet when smiling.

These are the lines most directly influenced by excessive or repeated muscle activity.

Static wrinkles remain visible even when the face is relaxed.

They may develop after years of repeated movement but can also be influenced by collagen loss, sun exposure, skin quality and age-related structural changes.

BOTOX® injections primarily target the muscular component of facial ageing.

For established static lines, your treatment plan may therefore include additional skin-quality or regenerative treatments when medically appropriate.

BOTOX® for the Upper Face

Forehead Lines

Horizontal forehead lines are strongly influenced by repeated activity of the frontalis muscle.

But forehead treatment requires careful planning because the frontalis also contributes to eyebrow elevation.

Before treatment, we therefore consider: eyebrow position; eyelid anatomy; forehead height; muscle strength; existing asymmetry; and the balance between muscles that elevate and depress the eyebrows.

The goal is not simply to create a completely smooth forehead.

The goal is controlled relaxation without unnecessary heaviness or loss of natural expression.

Frown Lines / Glabellar Lines / “11 Lines”

Vertical lines between the eyebrows are commonly called frown lines, glabellar lines or “11 lines”.

They are primarily associated with activity of the corrugator and procerus muscle complex.

Repeated contraction can eventually make these lines visible even when the face is relaxed.

BOTOX® can temporarily reduce this excessive muscular activity and create a softer appearance between the eyebrows.

Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet are dynamic lines around the outer corners of the eyes that become particularly visible during smiling.

They are strongly influenced by activity of the orbicularis oculi muscle.

Treatment can soften excessive lines while maintaining a natural smile.

Because the eye area interacts with eyebrow and cheek movement, the entire periocular region is assessed before treatment.

BOTOX® for the Mid & Lower Face

The lower face requires particularly precise treatment because these muscles are involved in smiling, speaking and eating.

Bunny Lines

Bunny lines are small dynamic wrinkles that appear around the sides or upper part of the nose during facial expression.

When muscular activity is the dominant cause, carefully selected botulinum toxin treatment may be considered.

Eyebrow / Brow Position

The position of the eyebrows is influenced by the balance between muscles that elevate and depress them.

In selected patients, changing this muscular balance may subtly influence eyebrow position.

This should not be confused with a surgical brow lift.

The possible effect depends on individual anatomy.

Gummy Smile

A gummy smile occurs when a larger amount of gingiva becomes visible during smiling.

In some patients, excessive elevation of the upper lip contributes to this appearance.

Botulinum toxin may sometimes be considered to reduce excessive muscular elevation.

However, dental anatomy, lip length and skeletal relationships may also contribute.

Correct diagnosis therefore comes before treatment.

Lip Flip

A lip flip uses carefully placed botulinum toxin to temporarily reduce selected activity of the muscle surrounding the upper lip.

This may allow the upper lip to appear slightly more everted during facial expression.

A lip flip does not add volume to the lips and is therefore different from dermal filler treatment.

The result is subtle and depends on individual lip anatomy, muscle activity and smile dynamics.

Chin Dimpling

An uneven or “orange-peel” appearance of the chin can be associated with excessive activity of the mentalis muscle.

In selected patients, botulinum toxin may be used to reduce this activity and create a smoother appearance during facial expression.

DAO / Downturned Mouth Corners

The depressor anguli oris — commonly referred to as the DAO muscle — contributes to downward movement of the corners of the mouth.

In selected patients with excessive downward muscular pull, carefully planned treatment may help create a more balanced lower-face expression.

Because the muscles of the lower face interact closely, conservative dosing and precise placement are particularly important.

Masseter BOTOX® & Jaw Slimming in Dubai

The masseter is one of the major muscles involved in chewing.

In some patients, the masseter muscles become particularly strong or enlarged, contributing to a wider or more square appearance of the lower face.

Masseter BOTOX® may be considered in selected patients to temporarily reduce excessive masseter activity.

Depending on individual anatomy and treatment indication, this may contribute to a softer lower-face contour over time.

Patients may seek assessment for concerns including: enlarged or prominent masseter muscles; a heavy or square lower face; excessive jaw-muscle activity; jaw clenching; or concerns related to lower-face muscular balance.

Jaw shape is also influenced by bone structure, soft tissue and facial volume.

For this reason, jaw slimming with BOTOX® is not suitable for every patient, and the expected effect depends on whether muscle hypertrophy is actually contributing to facial width.

Patients with jaw pain, teeth grinding or suspected temporomandibular disorders may require additional dental or medical assessment.

BOTOX® for the Neck & Jawline

Platysma Bands

The platysma is a superficial muscle extending across the neck and lower face.

With repeated activity and age-related changes, vertical platysma bands may become increasingly visible.

In selected patients, botulinum toxin can temporarily reduce excessive platysma activity and soften the appearance of these bands.

Nefertiti Approach

The so-called Nefertiti approach refers to selected botulinum toxin treatment of the platysma and lower-face muscular balance.

It may be considered when downward muscular pull contributes to the appearance of the jawline.

It is important to understand that BOTOX® does not tighten loose skin or replace surgical lifting procedures.

The treatment specifically addresses the muscular component of the concern.

BOTOX® for Hyperhidrosis in Dubai

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that can affect everyday comfort and quality of life.

Botulinum toxin can temporarily reduce nerve signalling to sweat glands in selected treatment areas.

Depending on the patient and medical indication, treatment may be considered for:

Underarms / Axillary Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating in the underarm area.

Palms / Palmar Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating affecting the hands.

Feet / Plantar Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating affecting the feet.

A medical assessment is important because excessive sweating can have different causes.

Treatment suitability, technique and expected duration vary according to the area being treated.

Preventative BOTOX®

Some patients consider BOTOX® before dynamic expression lines become deeply established.

This is sometimes referred to as preventative Botox or preventive Botox.

The objective is not to treat patients according to age alone.

Instead, treatment is based on factors such as: muscle strength; facial movement; early dynamic lines; individual anatomy; and the patient's aesthetic goals.

Not every young patient needs botulinum toxin treatment.

Treatment should be based on indication rather than age.

Who Is BOTOX® For?

BOTOX® injections in Dubai may be considered for adults concerned about excessive muscle activity contributing to: forehead lines; frown lines or “11 lines”; crow’s feet; selected lower-face dynamic lines; prominent masseter activity; visible platysma bands; or excessive sweating in selected areas.

It may also be considered by patients looking for natural-looking anti-wrinkle treatment without adding facial volume.

BOTOX® is not designed to correct every sign of ageing.

Patients whose main concern is skin laxity, volume loss, pigmentation, scarring or reduced skin quality may require a different treatment strategy.

What Happens During BOTOX® Treatment?

  1. Facial Assessment

Your doctor assesses facial anatomy, movement, muscle strength, symmetry and the relationship between different muscle groups.

  2. Personalised Treatment Plan

Injection points and dosing are selected according to the treatment area, anatomy and desired degree of muscle relaxation. There is no universal injection map suitable for every patient.

  3. BOTOX® Injections

Small amounts of product are administered into carefully selected points using a fine needle. Treatment time varies according to the number and complexity of areas being treated.

  4. Review & Follow-Up

The response develops progressively after treatment. A follow-up assessment may be recommended according to your individual treatment plan.

When Will I See BOTOX® Results?

BOTOX® results are not immediate.

The effect develops progressively as activity in the selected muscles decreases.

Patients may begin noticing changes during the first several days, while the treatment effect continues to develop thereafter.

The timing and degree of response vary between individuals and treatment areas.

How Long Does BOTOX® Last?

BOTOX® produces a temporary effect.

Duration varies according to factors including: treatment area; muscle strength; dose; individual response; previous treatment history; and biological variation.

As nerve-to-muscle signalling gradually recovers, muscle activity returns.

Further treatment can be considered when medically appropriate rather than according to a fixed schedule for every patient.

BOTOX® Aftercare

Immediately after treatment, small injection marks, mild redness, tenderness or temporary swelling may occur.

Your practitioner will provide aftercare instructions according to the area treated.

Patients are generally advised to avoid unnecessary pressure or manipulation of the treated area immediately after treatment.

Depending on your individual procedure, you may also be advised to temporarily avoid intense exercise, excessive heat or other activities.

Always follow the specific instructions provided by your treating doctor.
