What Is HELEO4™?

HELEO4™ is based on two related light-based approaches: Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) and Photobiomodulation (PBM).

These are not exactly the same process.

In the HELEO4™ professional PDT protocol, a specialised photosensitising gel is applied to prepared skin.

The active photosensitiser interacts with light of an appropriate wavelength in the presence of oxygen within the tissues, initiating a controlled photochemical reaction.

HELEO4™ also uses photobiomodulation protocols, in which controlled low-energy light is used without the same photosensitiser-dependent mechanism.

The doctor selects the appropriate protocol according to the patient's skin condition and treatment objective.

HELEO4™ for Acne

Acne is one of the areas where HELEO4™ can be particularly interesting within a combination treatment plan.

But acne should never be reduced to a simple problem of “bacteria on the skin”.

Acne is a chronic inflammatory condition involving several mechanisms:

Increased Sebum Production • Follicular Hyperkeratinisation • Cutibacterium acnes • Inflammation • Hormonal Influences • Individual Genetic Factors

Before using HELEO4™, we therefore determine what type of acne is present. Is the acne predominantly inflammatory? Are comedones dominant? Is there significant redness? Is there post-inflammatory pigmentation? Are scars already present? Is the patient currently receiving medical acne treatment?

The answer determines where HELEO4™ fits into the treatment plan.

The HELEO4™ professional range includes a dedicated ANTIACNE photosensitising protocol for inflammatory skin concerns.

The goal is not simply to treat today's breakout. The goal is to control the inflammatory process and reduce the development of new lesions.

HELEO4™ for Redness & Rosacea-Prone Skin

Persistent facial redness can have several causes.

It may be related to vascular changes, inflammatory rosacea, skin-barrier dysfunction or another dermatological condition.

HELEO4™ lists rosacea among its professional treatment indications, but this does not mean that every patient with visible redness receives the same protocol.

At Pearl Skin, we first determine whether the dominant problem is: Inflammation • Vascularity • Skin Sensitivity • Barrier Dysfunction • A Combination of Several Factors

If visible vessels are the dominant concern, a vascular technology such as ClearV® may be more appropriate.

If diffuse superficial vascular redness is the main target, BBL HEROic™ or another vascular protocol may be considered.

HELEO4™ is selected when its photodynamic or photobiomodulation approach corresponds to the patient's skin condition and treatment goal.

Redness is a symptom. Correct treatment depends on its cause.

HELEO4™ for Pigmentation & Photodamage

Uneven skin tone and visible pigmentation can develop through several different mechanisms.

HELEO4™ may be incorporated into selected treatment programmes aimed at improving overall skin condition and visible photodamage.

HELEO4™ vs LED Facial

HELEO4™ should not be described simply as an LED facial.

A basic LED treatment generally refers to exposure of the skin to selected wavelengths of low-energy light.

The HELEO4™ professional system can incorporate both: Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) using professional photosensitising formulations, and Photobiomodulation (PBM) protocols.

The photosensitiser-dependent photodynamic reaction is fundamentally different from simply placing an LED device over untreated skin.

HELEO4™ is a protocol-based professional system rather than one generic LED treatment.

HELEO4™ vs BBL HEROic™

HELEO4™ and BBL HEROic™ are different light-based technologies.

BBL HEROic™ uses BroadBand Light™ to target selected chromophores such as melanin and haemoglobin.

It may be selected for appropriate pigmentation, photodamage, superficial vascular redness and acne-related concerns.

HELEO4™ uses photodynamic and photobiomodulation principles.

The appropriate technology depends on what is being treated.

A patient with sun spots may require a different approach from a patient with inflammatory acne or skin requiring post-procedure recovery.

HELEO4™ vs ClearV®

ClearV® is a targeted 1064 nm Nd:YAG vascular laser designed for selected visible and subsurface vessels.

HELEO4™ is not designed to replace targeted vascular laser treatment.

When a defined vessel is the main concern, ClearV® may be more appropriate.

When inflammation, skin quality or recovery is the primary target, a HELEO4™ protocol may be considered.

The recovery profile of photodynamic therapy is not necessarily identical to photobiomodulation.

HELEO4™ Recovery & Downtime

  1. After Photobiomodulation
    • PBM protocols are generally selected when a low-downtime supportive approach is appropriate.
    • Temporary warmth or mild redness may occur.
  2. After Photodynamic Therapy
    • The skin response may be more noticeable depending on the photosensitiser, treatment intensity and indication.
